What is the wage subsidy scheme?

The South Yorkshire Wage Subsidy Scheme exists with ambitions to provide a structured pathway into sustained employment - it supports employers to recruit young people not in employment, education or training, and not mandated to look for work; offering them a paid job role for up to 13 week that is intended to lead to sustainable employment.

To be eligible to participate in the wage subsidy programme, individuals need to meet all the criteria below:

  • aged 16 – 30
  • not in employment, education or training, and not mandated to look for work 
  • a resident in Doncaster 
  • a Pathways to Work participant (unsure what this is? Get in touch with our team for more info).
  • not eligible for the Connect to Work Supported Employment offer 

The scheme offers up to 13-weeks (maximum) wage subsidy at the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for real jobs:

  • a sustainable job - minimum of 16-hours per week, funded to a maximum of 35-hours per week*
  • must pay at least the National Minimum Wage for the employee’s age group
  • must only require basic training
  • employability support will be offered to each candidate
  • Roles must be new and not displace existing staff

*Funding excludes associated tax, NI or pension costs.

To be eligible** as an organisation looking for Wage Subsidy Scheme funding you’ll have:

  • either full-time and part-time jobs available
  • an interest in supporting inclusive recruitment
  • a skills shortage/gaps
  • hard to fill vacancies
  • an opportunity for a young person to the gain skills and develop a career
  • a location in South Yorkshire; or, for organisations with a head office outside South Yorkshire, an operation located within
  • the ability to meet financial, insurance and reputational criteria
  • official registration as a business or charity
  • fewer than 250 employees
  • employment opportunities that are expected to last more than six months

*Organisations will have opportunity to access a maximum of five funded placements.
